The most important thing about being a photographer isn't the photo equipment that you use. It's your eye and the emotions that are evoked when people see your images. If you don't earn your living as a photographer you will probably want to invest more money into higher quality lenses instead of it into a high end camera. The Professional Photography Equipment That You Need To Have

One of the basic pieces of equipment you need to own is an SLR camera. Although film is now rarely used by professional photographers, both digital and film single lens reflex cameras give you the necessary ability to adjust your settings. You need to be able to manually adjust both the aperture setting and the shutter speed. Only then can you control the amount of light that hits the sensor or the film in your camera. While some point and shoot cameras give you this option, many don't.

If your camera comes with a "normal" focal length lens it will probably be the least used lens you own. You would be better off buying a camera body and a good zoom lens - one that zooms from wide angle to a medium telephoto focal length. Medium telephoto lenses will compress the image of a person's face very nicely while a wide angle lens can be ideal for taking scenic photos, panoramic shots, and large group portraits.

Tripods are necessary to help you to consistently frame your images. You will also want a tripod if your hand isn't steady and when you are taking photos over longer time frames.

Additional photography equipment, such as strobe lights, a light meter, and lens filters will definitely help you to make higher quality images if you know how to use them. And you will need a camera bag to carry and protect your equipment.

Good professional photography equipment can be relatively expensive. However, professional quality equipment can literally last for decades. The additional money spent on better equipment should be considered as a necessary, worthwhile investment for the professional photographer.
